“Sponsorship arrangements create a power imbalance for many immigrant and refugee women. When this power imbalance is combined with a lack of proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages, it creates fertile ground in which partner abuse can occur.
This abuse, in turn, has a strong impact on the risk of homelessness for immigrant and refugee women. So many of the immigrant and refugee women who are faced with domestic violence in their homes are paralyzed by the fear that their partners are going to have them “returned” to their home countries. This threat that is often verbalized by their partners is enough to keep them in the violent home.
